The International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is a bank identifier to process payments or money transfer within the same country or internationally.
IBAN contains all necessary information such as the account number, bank and branch information and country code so the money transfer can be completed successfully.
The IBAN contains an alphanumeric string of up to 34 characters. The structure is consistent across countries but the length may vary, depending on the national banking standards of the particular country.
The system initially developed to facilitate payments within the European Union and currently has been implemented by most European countries and many countries in the Middle East and the Caribbean. For the time being, more than 66 countries were using the IBAN numbering system.
IBAN does not replace the account holder’s existing bank account details, it simply displays them in a standard, internationally recognised format. As such, it is possible to generate IBAN from bank, branch and account number information. You can use various FREE IBAN Calculator tools available.
If you are going to make payment or fund transfer to a country that used IBAN, it is wise to validate IBAN number prior making international fund transfer to avoid any mistake.
Currently, Malaysia does not use IBAN but has to use IBAN to make any payment of fund transfer to the country that utilize IBAN system. The following countries already implement IBAN system.
